If you went looking for comedy shows in Mesa, AZ this week and expected the usual Saturday night, look again — this is one of the strangest weeks on our calendar all summer. Four nights, and no two of them are the same kind of show: a

Dungeons & Dragons stand-up experiment on Wednesday, three separate shows stacked back-to-back on Friday, and the all-ages flagship on Saturday.

The Neighborhood Comedy Theatre is on Main Street in downtown Mesa, and if you have been meaning to come and kept not doing it, this is the week.

Wednesday

Roll For Charisma, where a comedian’s set is determined by a roll of the D20.

Witness what happens when hilarious stand-up collides with the unpredictable whims of a live Dungeon Master! Our comedians will roll a D20 for their abilities, and whatever the dice decide, they’ll be forced to weave hilarious curses (and maybe a few blessings) into their sets!

No prior D&D knowledge is needed to enjoy this show! Mature audiences only.

Friday:

Three Shows, One Night, a triple header of Comedy

Friday is the most stacked night we run this month, and the three very different events.

At 6:00 PM the Short Form Jam is pay-what-you-want and open to anyone — fast games, mixed teams of community players and people who have taken exactly one class, nobody auditioning for anything. It is the cheapest possible way to find out whether you like this.

At 7:30, Soap-Box Stories changes register entirely: real people telling true personal stories, the childhood memory or the awkward thing nobody says out loud, hosted by John Janezic. It is warm, frequently ridiculous, and not an all-ages show. Then at

9:30 the Main Street Comedy Show runs late — a storyteller from the previous show shares something that actually happened to them, and the cast improvises scenes out of it while you watch. You can do all three in one evening. People do.

If You Leave Wanting to Be Up There

Almost everyone in all three of Friday’s showsat NCT came up through the same beginner classes, and the next one starts in two weeks. Level 1 — Intro to Improv meets Tuesday nights at 7:00 PM for six weeks, taught by Jenna Jacobsen. No experience needed.

Week one is not about being funny, which surprises people. It is about agreement — your partner says the boat is sinking, so the boat is sinking, and you are already a person on a sinking boat before you have said anything clever. From there you learn to find the game of the scene: the one unusual thing that is worth repeating on purpose. Improv classes in Mesa tend to fill in the last ten days, and this one starts August 25.
