Improv Comedy Curriculum
The Neighborhood Comedy Theatre offers improv classes in Mesa, AZ, a few minutes from Tempe, Gilbert, and Phoenix. New six-week sessions start about every nine weeks, so there’s almost always one coming up.
Improv classes aren’t just for people chasing a comedy career. If that’s you, great, you should. But most of our students are nurses, teachers, engineers, sales reps, retirees, and people who are tired of freezing up in meetings.
Improv teaches you to listen, think on your feet, and commit. Those skills follow you to work, into your relationships, and anywhere you have to talk to strangers.
Some students end up performing. Most just leave braver, quicker, and a lot funnier at parties.

Available Classes
Six Week improv classes
Level One:
Intro to improv:
No experience needed. Level One is where everyone starts. It’s low pressure, it’s a lot of laughing, and you’ll get plenty of stage time with one on one feedback from a professional improviser. You’ll learn the basics: quick thinking, building ideas with a partner, joke construction, and stage presence.
Level Two :
Short form and Performance
Continue exploring the exciting techniques and ideas of improv comedy while adding a focus on performance and game play.
Level Three:
Advanced Scene work and Game Play
Builds upon the skills learned in Levels 1 and 2, with more advanced scene work and hilarious improv games, with guidance from our experienced instructors.
Level Four:
Advanced Story telling
Builds upon the skills learned in Levels 1 and 2, and 3. Based on the skills used in our renowned Main Street Comedy Show, this six-week course will teach you advanced storytelling techniques and how to seamlessly integrate them into your improv scenes, with guidance from our experienced instructors.
Level Five:
The Harold
The Harold is one of the most influential long-form improv formats, with roots in the Chicago improv scene.
In this class, you’ll learn how to build a full show from a single audience suggestion — creating connected scenes, discovering patterns, and bringing ideas back in smart, satisfying ways.
We’ll focus on strong ensemble work, listening, and trusting the process as you learn to shape a complete piece together.
Level Six:
Musical Improv
Make up whole songs on the spot with a live piano player and a room full of people doing the same thing. Musical Improv takes the scene work you already know and adds rhyme, rhythm, and the occasional big finish. You don’t need to be able to sing, and we mean that. If you can talk, you can do this.
The Process Lab
A four-week Sunday afternoon class for students who have finished the core levels and want to keep working with a coach. It’s $100, and it ends with your group performing a showcase set on Indie Night.
Jams
Want stage time without signing up for a six-week class?
The jam is an open session where anyone can get up and play.
You’ll be put in scenes with other improvisers, from first-timers to people who’ve been doing this for years, and get feedback from an NCT cast member on the spot. Come to play, come to watch, or come to figure out if you want to take a class.
