Phoenix Improv Comedy: Two People, One Scene

Comedy Shows in Phoenix, AZ:

Two People, One Scene

Two people walk onstage. There’s no third improviser waiting in the wings to walk in and rescue the scene, no ensemble to absorb an idea, no tag-out. Just the two of them and whatever they build in the next few minutes. That’s Duo Night, and it happens this Thursday at 7:00 PM in downtown Mesa — a format we don’t run often, and the one that shows you most clearly how improv actually works.

Most Phoenix improv comedy you’ll see — ours included — runs on numbers. six  or eight performers, tag-outs, sweep edits, somebody stepping in when a scene stalls. That’s a feature, not a crutch; a big cast gives a show momentum and keeps the night moving. But it also means a lot of what makes improv work happens in the gaps, where you can’t quite see it. Two-person improv takes the gaps away. Everything the scene has, those two people brought. Every choice is visible. If you’ve watched a show at our comedy theatre in Mesa, AZ and wondered how are they doing that — this is the night the answer stops being invisible.

Thursday: Duo Night, and what a two-hander asks for

Duo Night isn’t on the weekly rotation. It turns up when it turns up, which is most of why it’s worth clearing a Thursday for. Ten people are on the bill: Sarah Christman, Kristina Lenz, Jenna Jacobsen, Blake Lytz, David Westlake, Jordan Collier, Kevin Reagan and Dorian Lenz performing, with Amber McCall on box and Amy Wegner on voice.

Thursday isn’t the only thing on this week, either. Friday the Main Street Comedy Show brings in author Anne Montgomery — a guest tells true stories pulled from audience suggestions and the cast plays off them — and Saturday the all-ages Competitive Comedy Show runs at 7:30 as usual.
